The Global Read Aloud
The Global Read Aloud was first started in 2010 with the goal of having one book to connect the world. Orchard School Library has participated in the event since the second year of its existence. Each year, during the six week period that begins in early October, educators attempt to make as many global connections as possible. We use Skype, Edmodo, blogs, Twitter, Padlet and just about any other means to connect with other classes.
Global Read Aloud 2017
Most grades at Orchard School participated in this year's Global Read Aloud. Second grade classes were still involved with a collaborative Dot Day Google Slides project with students in Pennsylvania so they were unable to join in the activities. Kindergarten and first graders did an author study of books by Australian author Mem Fox. Third, fourth and fifth graders heard Wild Robot by Peter Brown.
To introduce the Global Read Aloud selection The Wild Robot to fourth and fifth graders, a Breakout EDU activity was tackled. In collaborative teams, students needed to solve clues that would unlock the Breakout EDU box. The clues gave hints as to what the story might be about. Below are pictures from the engaging activity.
Fourth and fifth graders used LED lights to make their wild robot creations glow. Third graders designed robots, too, but did not light them up. Their pictures surround the board of illuminated robots.
Global Read Aloud 2015
All grades at Orchard School participated in this year's Global Read Aloud with library activities.
Kindergarten through first graders read books by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Second and third graders read Kevin Henkes' The Year of Billy Miller. Fourth and fifth graders read Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. |
Students enjoyed several Skype visits, including a few Mystery Skypes with new friends from across the United States who were reading the same books.
There were also a few fun projects connected with some of the books. For Amy Krouse Rosenthal's Duck Rabbit, students in kindergarten and first grades made puppets that, when flipped, became the other animal. The question was, "Is the shape a duck or a rabbit?"
Some other activities may be seen on this blog site. |
One particular thrill for the 2015 Global Read Aloud was being able to Skype with Fish in a Tree author, Lynda Mullaly Hunt. Four classes of 4th and 5th grade students participated in this special event.
When Ms. Hunt shared her Sketchbook of Impossible Things, we knew that we just had to create our own Pinterest board Sketchbook of Impossible Things. Students added 137 images to the board!!
We are looking forward to next year's Global Read Aloud selections!!

Global Read Aloud 2014In 2014, the Global Read Aloud for the 4th and 5th graders was Jennifer Holm's The Fourteenth Goldfish. During the six weeks of the project, in addition to Skyping and blogging with other classes, students designed various fish while listening to the chapters. The "school" of fish traveled down the hall and onto the ceiling! Estimates were that there were about a thousand fish by the end of the project!!
