I Love to Read Week
"I Love to Read Week" typically falls during the week that contains Valentine's Day (February 14th). It's an event that always is celebrated in the library, but some years extends throughout the entire school.
I Love to Read Week 2023
In preparation for "I Love to Read Week 2023," every K-5 student (about 450) created a heart showing the name of a favorite book. These hearts were hung in the hall outside of the library. Students also added to a "StickTogether" image that ended up saying "READ." Below are some images of the hall. To see a video of the display, click here.
During Valentine's Day week, it's also "I Love to Read Week. To celebrate, very K-5 class played either Red Clover or Mock Caldecott BINGO to wrap up these library projects. We played until every student won and was able to choose a "forever" book from a collection of donated books.
I Love to Read Week 2022
Since there was a huge celebration of World Read Aloud Day earlier this month, this year "I Love to Read" Week happened only in the library with every class playing either Red Clover or Mock Caldecott BINGO to receive a free book. Below are images of the worksheets that all students used to create their personal BINGO boards.
I Love School Week (including I Love to Read and Write) 2021
We were honored to have author/illustrator Jason Chin join kindergarten to second grade classes for a Zoom literacy event during "I Love School" week. He read PIE IS FOR SHARING to the youngest learners, showed them how he creates his illustrations, and answered many questions. We found out that Jason's own family is pictured on the book! For first grade and second graders, he read YOUR PLACE ON THE UNIVERSE. Students enjoyed seeing early sketches for the book. Jason ended the sessions with a drawing. What an interesting and fun day!
We celebrated " I Love School" all week. On Monday, literacy was the focus and we were thrilled to host Zoom visits with two South Burlington based authors. Students in grades 3 - 5 learned so much about owls from author Dayna Lorentz! Her new book OF A FEATHER gives readers a glimpse inside life from both an owl's perspective and that of a new foster child. We loved learning a bit about falconry, too. Writing from a visual prompt was such fun, too
I Love to Read Week 2020
I Love to Read Week had an interesting twist this year. In celebration of both Black History Month AND Women's History Month, all 22 K-5 classes, plus Art, Music and P.E. teachers, chose a famous Black woman they and/or their class would research. The class would create a poster to share information with the entire school during a Morning Meeting assembly. Please click here for a separate web page with information about this event.
I Love to Read & Write Week 2019 (Also including World Read Aloud Day this year)
For this year's I Love to Read Week celebration, Bingo games were created for both Red Clover and Mock Caldecott books. Kindergarten through third grade students played until everyone was the winner of a bookmark with a 3D printed charm. Everyone also received a new book from a fine selection.

To ready ourselves for a visit with David Kelly, all students heard Miracle Mud in the library. In the classrooms, students also heard a book from either David's Ballpark Mystery or MVP series.

It was interesting learning how David Kelly planned where the books would take place and who the main characters would be.
David Kelly also shared about his research process, his book organization, as well as how he deals with revisions. For more information about David Kelly's books, please visit his web site.
Josh Funk - 3rd Grades
All classes heard Josh's Dear Dragon, Pirasaurs!, and Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast books before visiting with him through Skype. Josh read to us his new book that will be available in bookstores in May. It was titled, The Case of the Stinky Stench. There were loads of giggles as Josh took on the characters in the book. It was such a fun visit! Josh Funk wrote about his Skype visits for "World Read Aloud Day" on his blog here. For more information about Josh Funk's books, activity kits, book trailers and more, please visit his web site.

Laurel Snyder - 4th Grades
Before our Skype visit, classes read Laurel's Bigger Than a Breadbox. They also read Laurel's picture books: Swan, The Longest Night, Good Night Laila Tov, and Inside the Slidy Diner. During our visit, Laurel read to the students from two of her books that have not yet been released to bookstores. Charlie & Mouse comes out in April and Laurel read two of this picture book's three chapters. She also read from Orphan Island, a middle grade chapter book that comes out in May. Find out more about Laurel Snyder's books here.

Laura Shovan - 5th Grades
Since the fifth grades were studying poetry, a read aloud of Laura Shovan's The Last Fifth Grade at Emerson Elementary was a perfect fit. In preparation for this Skype visit, students watched a YouTube interview of Laura by her daughter. We also took a look at a web page where Laura shared her binder for organizing The Last Fifth Grade at Emerson Elementary. During our Skype visit, Laura read her favorite poems from the book, as well as showing us how she kept track of the eighteen different voices in her book. Here's a link to Laura Shovan's web site.

At the end of "I Love to Read & Write Week," a display was created outside of the library to showcase all the places that students visited through Skype. Mileage was tracked to illustrate that Orchard School students connected with others over 24,050 miles! The display also included the four sketches created by visiting author/illustrator, Jason Chin, during his presentations to each grade level group. I Love to Read Week 2016
In celebration of I Love to Read Week, Orchard School had a school-wide Read-a-thon during February 2016. All classes read the book titled, The Reading Race by Abby Klein, a first grade teacher at our school. In the book, the characters are involved in a Read-a-thon at their school. Starting on Friday, January 29th, all Orchard students began recording the number of minutes they read both at school and at home for one week, which ended on Friday, February 5th. Children had one recording sheet for school and another one to keep at home. Families were encouraged to take time EACH night that week to read as a family and enjoy some good books together.
A COTS (Committee on Temporary Shelter) fundraiser was introduced by Mrs. Klein, Mrs. Macdonald, and Ms. Phalon's third grade class at a whole school morning meeting assembly. Students shared the fact that there are currently 172 children in our community who are homeless. That is enough children to fill four school buses or eight Vermont classrooms. They related that children without a housing are sick four times more often than children who are housed.
Here's how the COTS fundraiser worked: At the end of the reading week, school record sheets were sent home, and children totaled their number of minutes read (both at home and at school). Families chose to donate one penny for each minute their child read. Tne family could choose to make one donation if they had children in multiple grade levels. Every child was expected to read and record their minutes for the Read-a-thon; however, the donation was TOTALLY VOLUNTARY!!
On February 19th, students were surprised to find out that they had read for a combined 102,445 minutes during the one week event. Ms. Phalon's class presented COTS representative, Lori Goldman, with the money raised during the Read-a-thon. It totaled $1115.00! We hope that this will help many homeless children in need.

In addition to lots of great reading and fundraising, there were wonderful displays, too. Take a look at the Vine video of in front of the library. Here is one of pictures of favorite places to read, too.
